A Whole Body Supplement to Combat the Aging Process: Collagen

One of the newer kids on the supplement block that has recently caught traction is collagen. Collagen as a group encompasses the most abundant proteins in our bodies, and they act as structural components for our tendons, ligaments, cartilage, skin, blood vessels, and gut tissue. They consist of amino acids which are essentially the building blocks of protein; however, as we age, amino acid production may start to wane. 

There are three main types of collagen: 

  1. Type I is found in the connective tissue of our tendons, ligaments, bones, and skin. 
  2. Type II is found primarily in cartilage.
  3. Type III is mostly found in skin and blood vessels. 

Collagen has been discovered to help improve the appearance of our skin, alleviate arthritis-related joint pain, accelerate the healing process of musculoskeletal injuries, and improve overall gut health. 

It supplements are derived from the connective tissue of animals and marine life. It is commonly used as a powder or in a capsule form and is commonly known as hydrolyzed collagen or collagen peptides. Hydrolyzed collagen is formed when collagen proteins are broken down into smaller pieces known as amino acids. Bone broth is touted as a good source of collagen, but the source of the collagen and the methods used to break it down can cause wide variation in the quality of the end products. They are typically found to contain less-effective, lower doses compared to the concentrated forms sold, commonly sold as supplements. Studies have shown that these types of collagens are absorbed and incorporated into your body’s tissues such as cartilage and skin where it enhances tissue growth and repair. 

It makes up approximately 70% of the dry weight of our skin and is mostly considered type I. As we age the percentage of collagen may decrease dramatically and result in the loss of our structural integrity and skin’s appearance. Our skin may then appear saggy and dry with a loss of volume. This process may begin as early as our twenties! Studies have shown that oral hydrolyzed collagen supplements can improve skin hydration, promote overall smoothness and reduce fine lines.

Osteoarthritis is a degeneration of cartilage in our joints that can occur as we age or as a result of injury. It is another area that benefits greatly from collagen and has proven a reduction of pain, stiffness, and even disability that may potentially be associated with it. In professional studies, Hydrolyzed collagen studies have proven it to be superior in comparison with both glucosamine and chondroitin supplements. 

Osteoporosis is a degeneration of bone that can develop as we age causing bones to become brittle which drastically increases the risk of possible fractures. Based on medical studies, the risk brought on by osteoporosis can be reduced or even reversed by taking supplements like hydrolyzed collagen, vitamin D3, and calcium. Marine collagen has also displayed a possible benefit of reduced blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol.

It is undoubtedly a promising supplement that we should benefit from, particularly as we age. It is highly recommended for individuals over the age of 40 when the aging process really starts to accelerate. It may also be recommended earlier in life, for lifelong athletes and those who strive to maintain youthful-looking skin. As a word of caution, a very small percentage of customers have reported difficulties digesting some of these supplements, bloating, and heartburn.
